Damate has launched the first stage of the breeding and genetic center for small cattle in the Stavropol Territory. The cost of the project is 1.1 billion rubles. The new enterprise will reduce dependence on imported breeding products.

Damate Group has launched the first stage of the small cattle breeding and genetic center in the Predgorny district of the Stavropol Territory. The company has already started bringing animals to the new enterprise, 285 heads of the best meat and wool-and-meat producing breeds of domestic and foreign selection have been placed on the farm.

The project of the genetic center is being implemented in stages. It includes two farms with a capacity of 3600 heads of sheep, artificial insemination station, embryo laboratory and quarantine area.

Investments in the project will amount to RUB 1.1 billion, with Russian Agricultural Bank, JSC Rosselkhozbank acting as a financial partner.

«Damate carries out systematic work aimed at improving the sheep population and creating a breeding nucleus of highly efficient animals. The launch of the breeding and genetic center is important not only for the company and the North Caucasus, but also for the entire sheep breeding industry of the country. The work of the enterprise will create a stable Russian breeding base and reduce the dependence of sheep breeding on imported genetics,» - said General Director of Damate Andrey Sedov. «The main vector chosen is the way of breeding sheep within each breed and distribution of genetic material among private farms through artificial insemination. The work is carried out using the latest technologies in the field of reproduction and automated systems of breeding process management.»

To date, the company has completed construction and put into operation one of the center's facilities - a breeding sheep farm for 1,800 heads of single housing.

«The significance of regional breeding and genetic centers is important in the context of demand for mutton in the North Caucasus Federal District and Russia as a whole. Such sites make it possible to increase the commercial stock of highly productive animals in a short time. The implementation of the project will allow adding up to 4 thousand tons of Stavropol mutton per year on average and, as a result, expand the export of these products,» said the Minister of Agriculture of Stavropol Krai Sergey Izmalkov.

The Damate breeding center is designed to maintain and breed the best breeds of the world sheep breeding. The center will allow creating the best gene pool of Russian sheep by transferring the latest technologies in the field of genetics, breeding and reproduction, to reduce dependence on imported breeding products, to systematically develop the meat direction in sheep breeding. Development of the genetic base of sheep breeding is an important part of the lamb production project in the North Caucasus Federal District.

«Since 2000, the number of sheep in Russia has grown by 1.5 times, and the sub-sector itself has a high development potential. At the same time, it is important to grow not only quantitatively, but also to work to strengthen self–sufficiency with breeding material - this is exactly the task that the implementation of the breeding and genetic project solves. This is a high-tech enterprise that shows how high-tech modern agriculture in Russia has become. Breeding is one of the priorities for the development of the agro-industrial complex of the country. The center will improve the quality of products for internal and external consumers, and its opening is a big breakthrough for the industry,» said Irina Zhachkina, First Deputy Chairman of the Board of JSC Rosselkhozbank.

The company plans to deliver the second stage of the project in the fall of 2024. The completion of the entire project will take place in 2025.
