Damate Group held the I International scientific conference on the development of genetics of sheep breeding. The event took place on 26 October in Kislovodsk, the Stavropol Krai, and was attended by representatives of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, regional ministries of agriculture of the Stavropol Krai, the Karachay-Cherkessia and the Kabardino-Balkaria Republics, the National Union of Sheep Breeders of Russia, as well as about 30 representatives of leading agrarian universities and scientific institutions, the industry community of the country, foreign experts from Serbia, USA, Iran, and representatives of the farming community.

The event was dedicated to the development of Russian sheep breeding, the genetics of meat sheep breeding and the creation of a domestic breeding nucleus of highly productive animals, including in the regions of the North Caucasus Federal District.

The conference programme consisted of three thematic sessions devoted to global trends in the development of meat sheep breeding, prospects for the use of genomic technologies in sheep breeding and digitalization of the industry.

One of the sessions was moderated by Naum Babaev, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Damate Group.

"Our task is to exchange opinions, to hear about all modern world achievements in the field of genetics of sheep breeding, meat sheep breeding and to understand in what direction to move forward," - N.Babaev noted.

Damate shared its own experience of using advanced technologies in genetics, feeding, housing, reproduction and veterinary medicine. Damate is developing lamb production in the North Caucasus Federal District. As part of the project, breeding and fattening grounds are being built, and the country's largest meat processing plant has been launched. Damate was the first company in Russia to work with sheep farms under the contract farming model, and the service company established for this purpose provides consulting and resource support to partner farms.

The conference discussed topical issues of prospective development of Russian sheep breeding, tools for accelerated transformation of the sub-branch, as well as proposals for the integrated development of industrial meat sheep breeding in the North Caucasian Federal District. World practices of meat sheep breeding - the experience of China, Ireland, the development of sheep breeding in Kazakhstan, the state and prospects of sheep breeding in Russia were considered.

The participants analyzed the development of modern technologies and methods such as genomic selection and embryotransplantation, their application in sheep breeding. Digital transformation of the industry as a technological breakthrough in sheep breeding, federal programmes of digitalization were considered.

The topic of training specialists in the field of genetics, molecular and cell biology to solve the problems of increasing the efficiency of livestock breeding was also considered.

The participants had the opportunity to put their questions to the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia, discuss priorities for the development of the sector and exchange opinions on the problems of the industry. Special attention was paid to the measures of state support in sheep breeding.
